A book born from a journey lasting nearly ten years,
spanning Iceland, Mexico, Argentina, and the Bahamas, rendering the planet's surfaces as a single vast diptych.
The book aims to be part of a broader project, one that was already set in motion with the development of the new communication strategy designed for Cantiere delle Marche. The book reflects on the concept of travel, setting out to analyze each of its components separately: a relocation (movement) across a defined space (surface) over a specific duration (time).

Surfaces continues the photographic exploration of Cantiere delle Marche, this time turning its gaze to the surfaces of the planet.

The images produced by photographer and explorer Adrian Blanco aboard a Cantiere delle Marche vessel examine surfaces as an element of passage. A journey, as a central metaphor for the desire to discover and explore the surfaces of our planet.
What exactly is a surface? A surface is described as "the outer face or outer layer of something...", and honestly, it is intriguing to note that photography and surfaces have so much in common. A photograph is truly an outer surface that captures an extraordinary moment, bringing the very surface level of an experience to light.

Compositional rhythm
The book consists of a photographic sequence and follows a narrative structure made up of three elements: aesthetic exploration (photographic diptychs), emotional exploration (the author's personal stories), and physical exploration (the geographic account of the journey). The project thus aims to create a link between the physical and geographic movement of the ship and the photographer/explorer's inner journey, representing the dual nature of surfaces: the aesthetic-visual and the abstract-reflective.
The photographic diptych
The project functions like a collage of images linked by shared similarities. The use of photographic diptychs connects shots of a different nature that are visually remarkably similar. The perspective is that of the explorer who, aboard the ship, traverses and encounters different surfaces (land, sea, and sky), observing them through his own personal magnifying glass. The result is pairs of images that seem to remind us how nature repeats and propagates itself identically across all its forms. From the celestial vault to a shoal of fish, from the Earth's crust to the skin of a shark...
Surfaces portrays the planet's surfaces as a meeting point: sea, land, and sky reveal their closeness when observed up close.
